Build Your First Linux Server Guide - Part 3 - Basic Installation for CentOS 5.3In this part, I will write simple guideline how to install CentOS 5.3 through Text-Base installation. The CentOS installation GUI and X Windows are not neccessary for your server and you should avoid installing them to increase your server performance and security.

 Download CentOS 5.3 ISO file from www.centos.org and burn it on CD or DVD as installation media.

 

Use the installation media to boot up your server. On installation screen, type linux text and enter to start the installation in text mode.

If you sure your CDRom or DVD Rom is in good condition, so you can select Skip and enter.

Select English for language your use for installation process, select OK and enter. Select us for keyboard model, select OK and enter.

The warning message ask you to initialize the drive and erasing all data, this guide assume you installing a fresh new server, so select Yes and enter.

Select Remove all partitionas on selected drives and create default layout, leave other options default, select OK and enter.

Select Yes and enter on warning screen before partitioning.

Select No when ask you to review your partitioning layout.

Select Yes when ask you to configure your server's network interface.

Make sure you select Active on boot and Enable IPv4 support, select OK and enter.

On IPv4 configuration screen, select Manual address configuration and enter your server IP address and Prefix (subnet mask).  Select OK and enter.

Select manually and input your server hostname, select OK and enter.

Select your location as time zone, select OK and enter.

Type your password for root accounts, select OK and enter.

On Package selection, make sure uncheck everythings except Customizer software selection, select OK and enter.

On Package Group Selection, make sure following items been selected: Base, DNS Name Server, Editors, FTP Server, Mail Server, MySQL Database, Web Server.

Select OK and enter when asking for generate install log.

On Install Media confirmation screen, select Continue and enter.

The installation process start, depends on your hardware, usually it takes about 10 minutes to complete.
